Sustainability Working Group:
CAPC Kyoto SubCommittee

Kyoto Committee Executive Summary - November 13th, 2003

Federal Programs:

  • Industry Canada provided the working group of the various Federal government funding programs that support sustainable development and R&D infrastructure and how the automotive industry could benefit from them
  • Climate Change Action Fund would be the most applicable funding program for the automotive industry
  • Government may perceive that limited R&D takes place in Canada
  • An inventory of R&D programs in Canada should be developed for government and the automotive industry

Greening of the Canadian Automotive Industry:

  • Working group prioritized points from the document presented in May/03
  • Need to highlight the fact that the issue of GHG in transportation reduction is bigger then just fuel efficiency
  • Priorities should deal with Manufacturing, Vehicle, and Consumer
  • There is no magic solution

Climate Change Funding:

The breakdown for the climate change funding is as follows:

  • $500 million for Technology and Innovation
  • $100 million will go towards the development of ethanol production capacity
  • $32 million to commercial transportation energy efficiency and fuel initiative
  • $12 million for biodiesel
  • $10 million for natural gas vehicles
  • $5.5 million for marketing of energy efficient transportation
  • There is no allocation of funding for hybrid transportation
